Common Dental Emergencies

Here are some common Dental problems that people encounter, and the recommended course of action by the Canadian Dental Association:

Painful Toothache

When you feel a sudden painful toothache, it could mean a variety of things, so it is best to call us as soon as possible so that we can help you diagnose the problem, and book an appointment if necessary. To ease the pain of a tooth ache in the mean time, hold an ice pack to the outside of your face in the area where it is sore. Avoid warm liquids, using a heating pad, or a warm water bottle in the area as it will only add to your discomfort.

What to Do When You Break a Tooth?

Chipped or broken teeth can usually be salvaged without major dental work if it is addressed right away. If you book an appointment right away, we should be able to repair the damage with minimal fuss. If it is a larger break, or if you wait and it goes on untreated for a while, you may need a Root Canal, and to have crown placed to fully restore your tooth to optimum health.

Knocked Out Tooth

A knocked out tooth may be salvageable if you act quickly! If the tooth is clean and you think you can put it properly in the socket, then do so immediately, as there is a chance that the tooth will take root again. Call us immediately, as your chances of salvaging a lost natural tooth greatly diminish literally minutes after the tooth is lost, but you do have a chance to retain your natural tooth if the issue is addressed promptly up to a few hours of losing your tooth. If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, store it safely in a container of cold milk.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

Generally speaking, this is not a dental emergency, however it is possible to bite yourself hard enough that you may need stitches. Apply pressure to the bleeding area with a clean cloth, and use an ice pack or cold compress to keep swelling down. If the bleeding does not stop, please go to an emergency room immediately!

Got Something Stuck Between Teeth You Just Can’t Get Out?

Dental floss is the best way to remove debris between teeth that has overstayed its welcome in your mouth, but if something is really stuck, we can help! Simply give us a call and let us know what is troubling you.

Missing Filling

If you have a missing filling, the sooner you can see a dentist the better, as you will be preventing longer term damage to the tooth. You can protect the cavity until your appointment by applying a sugar free gum to the location. This is a short term solution and not a healthy substitute for dealing with the problem quickly.
